Complications During Pregnancy

Complications During Pregnancy
There are certain peculiar ailments which affect only a pregnant woman and if they are not attended to by the doctor, they might prove fatal to the woman. Some of the complications are…

Cystitis

There is an infection of the bladder. The symptoms are a frequent desire to urinate and pain and burning sensation while passing the urine. This disease responds to sulpha drugs and antibiotics and to drinking a lot of liquid.

Tubal Pregnancy

Tubal pregnancy takes place when the fertilized egg implants itself in the fallopian tube instead of the wall of the womb. As the tube is small, the egg tends to burst through when it reaches a certain size. The symptoms are severe bleeding and pain on one side. Surgery is necessary to stop the bleeding and remove the foetus and the damaged tube. Delay in seeing the doctor might endanger the life of the mother. Removing one of the fallopian tubes does not prevent a woman from becoming pregnant again.

Toxaemia & Eclampsia

The symptoms of toxaemia are puffiness about the face and hands, severe vomiting and headache, dimness or spots before the eyes and a very rapid weight gain. The doctor can detect this disease by urine analysis and blood pressure readings. Treatment depends on regulating the salt intake of the patient and making sure that she takes plenty of rest. If toxaemia is not attended to immediately, it gives rise to eclampsia which is the more serious from of toxaemia and can prove even fatal to the pregnant woman. Symptoms include difficulty in breathing, followed by coma, and finally death. Immediate medical attention can save the woman’s life. It mostly occurs during the last 3 months.of pregnancy and is more common in women who are pregnant for the first time.

Placenta previa

The placenta is an organ through which the foetus is nourished. But-in some cases, it is misplaced; instead of being attached high on the walls of the womb, it is down near the mouth of the womb. If some of the placenta is torn by the expansion of the cervix, pain, bleeding and premature labour will result.

Premature Separation of the Placenta

It is mostly caused by a hemorrhage just below its point of attachment. A blood clot forms and loosens the placenta from the wall of the womb. Both the above condtions, namely placenta previa and premature separation of the placenta, require immediate medical as they may prove fatal to both the mother and tile unborn child.
