“Fits” during pregnancy

Question: What would you recommend to a woman who gets fits during pregnancy?

Fits may be the result of illness (such as epilepsy) contracted before the pregnancy. The fit attack during the course of pregnancy can be traced to the same illness. In such cases, mediĀcation according to a doctor’s prescription becomes necessary.

If however, the woman has never had a fit prior to pregnancy and gets one during the pregnancy, then there is cause for conĀcern.

This affliction is known as toxemia or eclampsia and causes high blood pressure. Abnormality in urinary output can also bring on convulsions. This is a serious illness. It threatens the life of both, mother and child. Immediate hospitalisation is advised.
