swelling of feet or face during pregnancy

Question: How should one treat swelling of feet or face during pregnancy? Is it advisable to lessen fluid/water intake?

Swelling of feet or around the ankle is a common feature of advanced pregnancy (7th or 8th month). The pressure of child and uterus somewhat reduces blood circulation in the legs. This causes edema. It is better to stretch the legs out straight (at right angles to the trunk) rather than keep them dangling from the edge of the chair. For those with desk jobs, it is a good idea to support the legs by placing a low teepoy or cardboard box underneath the table. This helps reduce edema. Frequent movement of the toes also helps. This facilitates the circulation of blood in the veins. Lying down with a pillow under the feet also provides quick comfort and relief.
If any swelling is noticed on the face or around the eyes, consult a doctor at once because this may be an indication of blood pressure or kidney dysfunction. Cutting down on water intake to reduce edema is a misguided notion. According to the doctor, water intake need be measured only if kidney function is very limited. Such cases are usually hospitalised for treatment.
